Recording Desktop Videos With Chromebooks (Screencast-o-Matic)
If you have a Chromebook, please use Kaltura Express (web-based video recording) to record videos for your courses. Kaltura Capture isn't compatible with Chromebooks.
Chromebook users who need to record their desktop need to use an alternative like Screencast-o-Matic. Screencast-o-Matic is a free screen recording, editing, and storage solution.
Notes on Using Screencast-o-Matic
- The free version of Screencast-o-Matic has limitations: you can record your screen and/or webcam, and do simple trimming; videos have to be shorter than 15 minutes and there will be a watermark
-
Chromebook users can use Screencast-o-Matic for web screen recording because Chromebooks can’t use Kaltura Capture for screen recording, but they can use Kaltura Express Capture for webcam recordings
- After you record your video to Screencast-o-Matic, you have a few options:
- Submit a link to the Screencast-o-Matic video on Brightspace (instructions)
-
Download a Screencast-o-Matic video and upload it to your MY Media before submitting on Brightspace (instructions)

7. If you like your recording, press Done on the bottom toolbar.
8. You have two options to share the recording to Brightspace:
#1 Get the quick link to the video recording and submit the link to the assignment on Brightspace (instructions).
#2 Download the video, which will be a .webm file, and upload to Kaltura My Media on Brightspace (instructions). To submit a video for grading, follow these instructions.
Not every device or browser will be able to view a .webm file so you must convert it to a Kaltura video for your instructor can see it.
