Extra Credit or Bonus Points in Brightspace Quizzes
Bonus Points in Quizzes
To create a bonus question in a quiz do the following:
- Create your quiz questions as normal. For help on creating quizzes, see our video “How to Create a quiz in Brightspace”.
- Once you have inputted all of your quiz questions, click quizzes from the blue nav bar. Find the quiz you’d like to add a bonus question to and click the down arrow next to the quiz. Then click edit.
- Scroll down to where you would add/edit questions and click the “edit values” button.
- To indicate than an item is a bonus, click the box under the bonus column.
- Then click save and close.
Note: Unless you indicate IN THE question that the question is a bonus, your students will not know that the question is a bonus. (You may or may not want to reveal this to your students). Also remember if you click the “mandatory” option, the student will be forced to answer the bonus item before submission, even though it is bonus.
NOW: IF You do not want the quiz score to be able to exceed 100% you are finished.

**IF you want the grade item, category and/or overall final grade to exceed 100% you’ll need to modify your gradebook**
*Note: this scenario only comes into effect if you anticipate a student getting 100% on all of the regular grade items. If you click this, and no student achieves the greater than 100% scenario in any of these areas (item, category or overall) you won’t notice the change.
To make the grade item exceed 100%
1) To allow for scores greater than 100% click “grades” from the blue nav bar. Then click “manage grades”.
2) Locate the grade item that you’d like to change and then click the arrow next to the item. Then click edit.
3) Scroll down and click the “can exceed” box. DO NOT click the BONUS box as this will make the WHOLE quiz a bonus rather than just one item.
4) After you have clicked “can exceed” hit save and close.
5) Your quiz will now be allowed to register as greater than 100%.
If you are using a weighted gradebook and you would like the category to be able to exceed 100%, you will need to also modify the category.
- Click grades, then mange grades.
- Locate the CATEGORY (the lighter blue shading) and click the dropdown arrow next to it. Then click “edit”
- Click the “can exceed” button. This will allow the grade category (i.e. quizzes) to exceed the weight that you’ve placed on it and therefore potentially have a bigger knock on effect to the final grade. (i.e. if your quiz average is 105% and the quizzes are 20% of the final grade, your grade could see a slight boost.
If you are using EITHER gradebook (weighted/points) and you would like the overall grade to be able to exceed 100% then you must also modify the final calculated grade category.
- Go to grades, then manage grades
- Locate the final calculated grade item and then click the dropdown arrow next to it. Then click Edit.
- Click the “can exceed” box. Then click “save and close”.
- NOTE: do not change ANYTHING else other than the “can exceed”.
