Awarding Bonus Points or Extra Credit Points for Assignments in Brightspace
Bonus points on Assignments:
To award extra points on an INDIVIDUAL assignment.
-
There is no automatic formula to give extra points in an assignment. If you wish to give a student more points as a bonus, then indicate the point value and why those points have been allocated in the comments.
- If you’d like to give students MORE Than 100%, you must change the grade item/category/and or overall grade to exceed 100%.
To Allow a Grade Item to Exceed 100%
- To allow for scores greater than 100% click “grades” from the blue nav bar. Then click “manage grades”.
- Locate the grade item that you’d like to change and then click the arrow next to the item. Then click edit.
- Scroll down and click the “can exceed” box. DO NOT click the BONUS box as this will make the WHOLE quiz a bonus rather than just one item.
- After you have clicked “can exceed” hit save and close.
- Your quiz will now be allowed to register as greater than 100%.
If you are using a weighted gradebook and you would like the category to be able to exceed 100%, you will need to also modify the category.
- Click grades, then mange grades.
- Locate the CATEGORY (the lighter blue shading) and click the dropdown arrow next to it. Then click “edit”
- Click the “can exceed” button. This will allow the grade category (i.e. quizzes) to exceed the weight that you’ve placed on it and therefore potentially have a bigger knock on effect to the final grade. (i.e. if your quiz average is 105% and the quizzes are 20% of the final grade, your grade could see a slight boost.
If you are using EITHER gradebook and you would like the overall grade to be able to exceed 100% then you must also modify the final calculated grade category.
- Go to grades, then manage grades
- Locate the final calculated grade item and then click the dropdown arrow next to it. Then click Edit.
- Click the “can exceed” box. Then click “save and close”.
- NOTE: do not change ANYTHING else other than the “can exceed”.
