Account Transition Guide for Students
🎓 Post-Graduation Account Transition Guide for SMC Students
As you prepare to graduate from Spartanburg Methodist College (SMC), it's important to begin transitioning any personal or professional services currently linked to your SMC credentials (e.g., @smcsc.edu
email address or Microsoft 365 account). This guide outlines what to expect, how to plan ahead, and how to receive support from the SMC IT Department.
⏳ Account Access After Graduation
Graduating students will retain limited access to their SMC email and Microsoft 365 account for up to one (1) calendar year after their official graduation date. During this grace period:
Email Access: You can still send and receive emails via Outlook.
Microsoft 365 Tools: You will continue to access tools like OneDrive, Word, Excel, and Teams using your current credentials.
Authentication Services: Your SMC credentials will remain active for services that rely on single sign-on (SSO), but we recommend updating your contact information and login credentials on external accounts as soon as possible.
After this one-year period, all access will be permanently removed.
🧾 What You Need to Do
To avoid losing access to critical documents, services, or communications, please follow these steps:
1. Update Personal Accounts
If you've used your SMC email for external services (e.g., banking, job applications, social media, subscriptions), update your contact email to a personal email address.
2. Backup Your Data
Before your account is deactivated, download or transfer important files from:
Microsoft provides guidance on exporting data to help with this process.
3. Transfer Ownership
If you manage or contribute to shared documents, Teams groups, or OneDrive folders, be sure to:
🔐 Microsoft-Based Environment Notes
Since SMC is a Microsoft-based institution, your email and file storage are integrated with Microsoft 365. Upon deactivation:
Your @smcsc.edu
email address will be permanently disabled.
All associated files stored in OneDrive will be deleted.
Your Microsoft 365 license will expire and associated apps will revert to view-only mode if you continue using them on personal devices.
